Mark your calendars and get ready for a day full of fun, laughter. and friendly competition at the Port Navas Regatta on July 25th 2026 on the Quay at Port Navas.
This much-loved annual event promises something for everyone, so gather your family and friends for a fantastic day out.
The Regatta starts at 12 noon on Saturday with the first race, The School Cup between Constantine and Mawnan Primary Schools, kicking us off at 12.30.
There will be a food van; PNYC Bar & Restaurant food; the traditional cake stall; a bar; young kids races such as Egg &. Spoon and Sack Racing; games in the field including Cocconut Shy, Splat the Rat etc and a new game, Donald Duck Shoot; a tombola; the normal Regatta Races including rowing, run-and-row, swimming, paddle boarding and kayaking; the chaotic but brilliant Fun Race; a grand raffle (donations of prizes most welcome); The Constantine Silver Band; and after the prize giving we will have live music and dodgy dancing and singing from the crowd as we welcome back Elvis Duane Presley, supported by Jake singing some banging hits.
Here are some of the 2025 Regatta photos shared on WhatsApp. Click to enlarge and scroll through.
Thank you residents and friends of Port Navas for supporting Regatta 2024 despite our last minute weather re-scheduling. The Regatta Committee have had wonderful feedback and were so pleased to see so many people enjoying our annual village event.
We are pleased to be making donations to local community charities – National Coast Watch (Nare Point), Helford River Users Group (maintenance of 4 Helford Marker Buoys), Mawnan Smith Village Community Playground, Constantine Silver Band, Clean Ocean Sailing, the Children’s Sailing Trust and also awarding the prize money for the new Schools Relay Beattie Cup to the winners – £300 for Mawnan Smith Primary and in second place – £100 to Constantine Primary School.
Thank you everyone.

Once again the Port Navas Regatta defied the weather forecasts and we had a windy but rain-free, warm day. One of our participants summarised it in the following way; “A brilliant happy regatta! The day flowed, it was fun, easy, and a lovely vibe. From start to finish a really great time.”
In the Ladies & Gents pairs Phil Badger and Jill Pascoe won again – having first won the race together in 1968 aged 17 – and many times in-between. Sam Winfrey won the overall men’s cup for the 4th time, overtaking his dad’s record of three wins. And Jill Pascoe won the overall points win for the Ladies capping yet another fine year at the PN Regatta.
For all the winners, see results below.

The fun race, with 11 teams and some 60 people of all ages splashing around collecting ducks, was a great event with one capsized boat and one almost-sinking boat (all safely looked after by the safety team) and with Team Gerry Blackstone Karapanos finding the lucky duck to claim victory.
For our younger particpants, the three-legged race was a blast, along with the sprint and egg-and-spoon:
We had a gentle go at encouraging a nautical fancy dress and the Committee hope to build on this for next year. Pirate Paul Amey won the prize this year, with Captain Tom as runner up.
Thanks to The Constantine Silver Band who provided delightful regatta music for all those eating and drinking at PNYC.

Following Prize Giving at the yacht club, we saw the introduction of the Human Fruit Machine which was brilliant and WILL be back next year by popular request.
This was followed by some beautiful singing from The Lemonaires Cornish Male Voice Choir and then local singer Charlie Blundel banging out some crowd favourites that almost everyone sang and danced along to.

The money raised will go towards all the costs in running the regatta next year and then to some very local, small charities. The amount raised and the chosen charities will be added to this page as soon as the final reckoning has taken place.
And the beer didn’t run out !
If you have some lovely pictures or movies that you are happy to share, please forward them to jeff@mdws.net. We can’t promise to publish everything!
A HUGE thanks from the Committee to all the volunteer’s because without their help this event just would not take place. THANKYOU to the volunteers who ran the games, the kids running races, the Tombola and the Grand Draw; to all those who helped setting up the games, tents, cups and doing gardening or mowing fields for events and parking; to the team that set up the water based courses, moved the boats (and put them all back) and ran the pontoon all day and to the safety and prize teams on the water; to the Cake Stall team and all those who provided and baked for it; to Melissa & Sarah and their team for running the bar and doing fabulous food; to all the volunteers who helped with rubbish collection during the event; to the Tombola collection team & donators and the parking attendants; to Phil and Lulu Badger on the mic; to our external providers and sponsors and to those that helped pack everything away on Sunday. And to all who came and enjoyed a wonderful day at beautiful Port Navas. See you all next year.

Midbar has created a splendid new trophy for the standup paddle board race at the Port Navas Regatta. It will be known as the Thomas Trophy in recognition of the contributions to Port Navas life made by Sally Thomas and her family.
Sally’s parents, Fred and Bunnie came to Port Navas almost exactly 100 years ago. Fred started his garage here – servicing boats and cars with petrol pumps on the quay where the house called The Garage stands today. Sally and her brother Robin were born in the cottage on the quayside where she still lives. They both contributed to many village events including regattas and Sally displays an impressive collection of her cups and trophies at home.
Winners of the Thomas Trophy will have their names added to the trophy and will receive a wooden medal. As the trophy is so unique and significant, and heavy, it will be kept in the village and winners will be able to display their medal and photographs at home.
Thanks to Dilys for the photos and for managing all the Regatta trophies for more years than anyone can remember.

The Ron Badger Annual Special Award for long and outstanding service on behalf of the Regatta went to Mel Chambers.

We were delighted that the 2021 Port Navas Regatta went ahead. It was all looking a bit grim early on Saturday with strong gusting winds, overcast grey sky and squalls of rain. At that point a lot of us were wondering weather (delib typo) we had done the right thing. But by lunchtime the rain had stopped and didn’t return and we even had the sun regularly peeking out between the clouds for the rest of the afternoon. So more than good enough!
We estimate about 350 people attended which was fantastic given the very limited advertising we had done. It felt very local and very joyful. Wonderful to see families with kids of all ages turning up, mask free in the fresh air, to take part. We had a limited number of games and running events in the field but they were all a great success.
Look at the concentration on their faces!
Steve did a fabulous job marshalling boats and kayaks on the Cook’s pontoon.
Amongst the racing on the water Sam Winfrey had a great regatta and left with the overall junior trophy – great job Sam. Phil Badger and Jill Pascoe won the hotly contested mixed pairs.
Tom and Coralie Green came a very credible second in the blindfold race after an appalling start (in last place in the picture below). The race was won by Zoe and Jacqui Freeman.

The fun race was spectacular – see the short video clip below – with 12 boats with on average 5 people in each boat meaning we had some 60+ people, mostly but not exclusively kids and teenagers, racing with no oars to collect a duck and bring it back to the quay.
We also had the return of The Greasy Pole, now named It’s A Knock Off. Thanks so much to Joe (the winner) Euan, Finn and Charile for volunteering to be our test dummies for this year. There is a short video of the event on the website. We learnt a few lessons and next year we’ll have a number of individual fights including a wife vs husband, a vets matchup and a couple of mixed “yoof” head to heads (ie girls and boys).
The event ended with The Oggeymen singing fabulous songs in the PNYC car park. A HUGE thanks to Rob Norman and all the boys for gracing us with their marvellous singing.

All in all it was a perfect way to finish the 2021 Port Navas Regatta.
Heartfelt thanks also to all those volunteers who gave time in some many ways to help get the Regatta up and running:As well as the committee this included Fran Ford, Sara Clark, Max Hart, Beth and Dan Turling, Jules Bennett and her squad for all the young kids events in the field, Andrew Spinks, Henry Shaw on the water, Chris for lending us the use of the field and for helping with the greasy pole, Nikki Jones, Nick and Val Roper, Mel Chambers, Hannah Darling and Dave Tully, James Philipps, The Haigh boys, Antonia Ellemann, Richard Turner, Lee and Anne Frost with the calendar, The Sailing Trust for their help with boats, Gaye Tiptaft, Sally Thomas for her flags, Jeff and Tiffa Meadows, Joe and Lauren at The Boat House, The Duchy for use of The Oyster Quay, Dinyan for use of their garden and steps for the Row & Run, The Garmans for the safety boat, assorted Bootes for the prize boat, Andy and Melissa Cook, George Brew, Dilys Gardner, Daisy Griffith, James Hodge, Peter Jones, Anna McLaren, West Country Foods for the coconuts, The Mainbrace Rum team and Richard Blake and Yallah Coffee for doing everything at cost. And thanks for all those who offered to help with the cake and tea stall – this will be back to normal for 2022. Couldn’t do it without all this help. (If I have missed anyone off this list of thanks it’s my fault and please let me know because we’d love to have your help again – admin@pnyc.co.uk)
If you would like to lend a hand next year, in any capacity, please just email cate.jones@btinternet.com
Tom Ellemann on behalf of The Regatta Committee
The Port Navas Regatta was first held in August 1914, in the same week that war was declared. It was not held again until 1921.

There were lapses again in the years before and during the second war, and after the war it was often difficult to get a committee together. The Regatta was re-started properly in 1962 and has been run every year since until this year when it fell victim to the coronavirus pandemic.
For more about the re-establishment of the Regatta in the early sixties scroll to the bottom of History > The Regatta for the late Maurice Tonkin’s personal notes.
We’re all looking forward to next year’s Regatta. In the meantime Margaret Scott thought you might enjoy this collection of old posters.

A typically wonderful Port Navas Regatta: fabulous weather; a happy crowd; great competition on the water, and well-deserved prizes. Next year’s Regatta will be on August 1st at 3pm.

Prizewinners:
The sun shone on Port Navas this year, bringing in a record attendance for its annual Regatta. There was much fun and laughter from the watchers on the quay as the intrepid ventured to do battle on the water. “This was a really successful event, “ said Richard Tiptaft the Chair of the Regatta Committee, “made possible by the hard work and dedication of the local community.” Richard also paid tribute to his wife, Gaye, for all her hard work. “I couldn’t do this without her,” said Richard, “she has done so much to make it be so brilliant.” The Regatta has raised a great deal of money for charities such as Air Ambulance, the local Hospice movement and RNLI amongst others over the years. ‘We hope to do even better this year,’ said Jonathan Fine, the regatta treasurer, “not all the money has been accounted for and not all the bills paid but it is looking very good so far.”
As well as water events, there were plenty of activities along the shore line with family games and stalls. The children’s fancy dress theme ‘Super Heroes” had such a high standard that everyone won a prize! The food tent, run by Cate Jones, was especially successful crammed with home made delicacies as well as a hugely popular BBQ with lamb supplied, as it is each year, by Budock Vean Hotel.
Pauline and Don Garman were awarded the Ron Badger Special Award for their huge contribution to making the Regatta such a success.

A very memorable Port Navas Regatta was held along Quay Road, in the Yacht Club car park and on the Quay. Thanks to all those Quay Road residents gave up their parking space and gardens to the Coconut Shy, the Bottle Maze, Whack the Rat, Putt for Dough and the Hoopla. The Food Tent was huge success and the Silver Band played on the Quay House terrace. The rowing and swimming events were hotly contested as usual.

Port Navas: July 28th 2012
There were some old favourites and some new ideas at this year’s popular Port Navas Regatta attended by hundreds of locals and visitors. It was a heart stopping moment when exactly at 12 noon as the events started there was a shower but it only lasted a minute and the rest of the afternoon was warm and sunny. Richard Tiptaft, the new Chair of the committee was very pleased. ‘It was nerve racking on my first year in charge but it was also very exciting and the committee has been incredibly supportive,’ said Richard. ‘ Over £4500 was taken on the day and all the profits go to charity, mainly local ones or ones with a local interest such as RNLI.’
Richard introduced a new children’s game aimed at under 6s in which they had to hook a duck for a prize. There were also a couple of new water events which kept the competitors on their toes.
The Ron Badger Special Award Cup was given to Jeff Meadows, the previous Chair, and his wife Tiffa for all their hard work in running the Regatta for the last 8 years. The prizes were presented by Aline Turner, who was determined to wear her hat! She was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers by Jinny Leybourne.

30th July 2011
The Port Navas Regatta had another successful year with a combination of water and field events for all ages and abilities. Hundreds turned up to watch the fun and take part. “The atmosphere was very special,” said Jeff Meadows the Chairman of the Regatta Committee, “people were clearly having a wonderful time and local charities have benefitted as well – a win-win situation!” This was Jeff’s last Regatta as Chairman and a special engraved wine glass was given to him by members of the committee in gratitude for his eight years at the helm. The Ron Badger Annual Special Award went to John Blatter who has worked tirelessly over many years to create a successful event.
Richard Tiptaft from Point Cottage will take over as Chairman next year. The plans are already underway for the 2012 Regatta which will be on Saturday 28th July 2012.
7th August 2010:
The sun shone on the popular Port Navas Regatta as hundreds came to watch the rowing and swimming races, take part in the children’s games and try their luck on the fair stalls. ‘Due to a record number of helpers, this has been one of the easiest Regattas to organise,’ said Jeff Meadows, Chairman of the Regatta Committee. ‘It is fantastic that whilst people are having a great time we are able to raise money for many local charities.’
The prizes were awarded by Margaret Goad who with her husband Peter, runs the Port Navas Yacht Club. This will be their last year running the club as they plan to retire in March. ‘We shall miss them a great deal,’ said Jeff, ‘ they have been an important and hard working part of our community.’
The Ron Badger Annual Special Award – given to a person who has contributed above and beyond the call of duty to the success of the Regatta went to Sally Annan and Marian Saunders who have shared the organisation of the splendid food at the Regatta for many years.
The plans are already underway for next year’s Regatta on Saturday July 30th 2011 at 4pm.

1st August 2009
The morning dawned wet and miserable but almost on the dot of 12 o’clock, the clouds parted, the sun shone and the popular Port Navas Regatta had record attendance this year. Hundreds turned up to watch the fun and take part. ‘It was a beautiful afternoon, ’ said Jeff Meadows, Chairman of the Regatta Committee, ‘ there was a great atmosphere and the everyone seemed to be having a good time especially the little kids who were enjoying playing in the puddles left by the morning rain. As usual the crowd were very generous and I’m sure we’ll be able to make substantial contributions to our usual mix of charities.’
As well as the usual favourites, a very popular innovation this year was Mr Coolmagic – Paul Snowman – who provided face-painting and balloon sculptures for the children. ‘As well as raising money, we particularly want this to be a fun event especially for the children,’ said Jeff, ‘and they were thrilled with their animal faces and balloon hats and sausage dogs.’
The events on the water provided much entertainment and particularly popular was the RNLI demonstration as a luckless victim was thrown overboard to be rescued amidst wreaths of orange smoke. Also popular were the fun races where enthusiasm and innovation replaced mere ability with oars. This year, local competitors were challenged by many visitors and there were more entrants then ever.
‘I couldn’t believe how many people came to this small corner of Cornwall, and there was so much to do and see,’ said Tom Hesling a visitor from London. ‘ It was a great day out!’
The plans are already underway for next year’s Regatta on Saturday 7th August 2010.

I’m sure that everyone with an interest in the Port Navas Regatta will already know that we had a great event this year. Of course the weather helped and so did the early tide, but I want to thank, on behalf of the organising committee, all those who gave their time and energy to make our Regatta such a success. Port Navas is not a very large village and we are dependant on help from our many friends from the surrounding area. If you able to give us a hand next year please contact a committee member.
It’s great to see so many people clearly having a good time and that is really all we hope to achieve. In the process we do manage to raise a little money; this year just over £4000. This money will be distributed amongst our usual mix of national and local charities.
Next year’s Regatta will be on August 7th. Please put the date in your diary now.
Thanks again to all who helped and all who came. See you next year.

The Port Navas Regatta was very well attended this year with the weather co-operating until an evening shower just after all the events were finished. Hundreds turned up to watch the fun and take part. ‘The atmosphere was very special’ said Jeff Meadows, the Chairman of the Regatta Committee, ‘people were clearly having a great time and enjoying the variety of amusements available. Our swimming and rowing events attracted record numbers of competitors and all of our fund-raising activities were very well supported. We expect to be able to pass on well over £3000 to local charities.’
As well as the usual favourites, the Duchy Oyster Farm ran an Oyster Bar, which was very popular and raised over £170. ‘The oysters were free but we had a donations box and people were very generous.’ said Jeff. Another innovation – a murder mystery hunt – also created fun and interest for the younger visitors.
Lady Woodard presented cups to all the winners. The Ron Badger Annual Special Award – given to a person who has contributed to the success of the Regatta over a number of years – went to Fiona Beale who was in hospital recovering from a hip operation when she received her cup filled with flowers.
Next year’s Regatta will be on Saturday 1st August 2009 and, thanks to an early tide, the event will start at 12 noon.

The Regatta this year was a wet but very happy occasion. Despite heavy rain, hundreds still turned up to watch the fun and take part. A new event, the rescue of drowning people by Newfoundland Dogs was particularly enjoyed by the crowds. ‘Takings are understandably down this year because of the weather’ said Jeff Meadows the Chairman of the Regatta Committee, ‘but the sense of community was fantastic and all the rowing and swimming races were fully subscribed.’
Plans are already underway for next year’s Regatta on Saturday 2nd August 2008. ‘Let’s hope that we get better weather!’ said Jeff.

An early neap tide on the Helford River meant a noon start for competitors in the 2006 Port Navas Regatta. But the early start did not deter the hundreds of local residents and visitors who lined the quayside to help raise some £4,000 for local charities.A packed programme of 18 rowing and swimming events was well supported by young and old alike with plenty of vocal support from friends and families gathered on the village oyster quay. Children’s races took place in the adjacent events field, where the sideshows and games were in big demand along with queues for the barbecue, the cake stall, drinks and the ever popular tombola.
Highlights of the afternoon were a lifesaving demonstration by the crew of the Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat, and a musical interlude by the Constantine Silver Band.
Regatta Chairman, Jeff Meadows, said he was delighted that so many people turned out to support the event despite the early start and that this regatta had been a particularly relaxed and friendly community event for all the family. “We’ve had another very successful Regatta.” he said, “It is amazing how local people pull together to support this event. Everyone had a great time and we raised quite a lot of money for charity.”
“It’s a pity that we don’t enjoy the same level of support from Cornwall County Council, who removed the only sign promoting the Regatta from the Argal crossroads on the eve of the event.” “I think it was very unkind to remove a sign advertising an event which donates all proceeds to local charities and which means so much to the local community. I do hope they’ll rethink their decision for next year.”
Regatta Committee Chairman, Jeff Meadows, announced the winners, ably assisted by Dilys Gardner and Fiona Beale. The prizes were presented by Anoushka Szturmowska, fiancée of Port Navas Oyster Farm owner Ben Wright. The results were as follows:

A cool breeze, grey skies and early evening drizzle failed to dampen the enthusiasm of competitors and spectators alike at another highly successful event. Several hundred visitors turned out to watch eighteen rowing and swimming races which attracted competitors of all ages.Games of skill and chance, produce and plant stalls, barbecue and summer refreshments all helped raise profits of over £4,000 which will be donated to The Air Ambulance, The RNLI and The Macmillan Nursing Service, with contributions also going to a number of smaller local charities.
A highlight of the afternoon was a ‘yacht rescue’ demonstration by crew members of the Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat ‘Falmouth Round Table’ skippered by senior helmsman Dave Nichol.
Away from the waterside, a number of field events for children took place on the regatta field, while the Constantine Silver Band played during intervals in the racing.
The rowing and swimming races were all hotly contested with Richard Winfrey taking the President’s Cup as overall men’s winner and young Pip Badger scoring her first overall ladies win and taking away the Ron Badger cup.
Prizes were presented by Mrs Peggy Shepherd, who has lived in the village for more than 30 years and is the co-author of ‘The Story of Port Navas’. Peggy’s bouquet was presented by Pip Badger.
CV2747 back in Port Navas
To mark their UK centenary, Michelin Tyre PLC have restored a 1930 ‘Snubnose’ Morris van: CV 2747. The vehicle has been lovingly rebuilt in the style of a Michelin Technical Service Van. These vans toured the UK in the thirties promoting the benefits of air-filled tyres.
In 1942 CV 2747 was aquired by ‘Skip’ Thomas, Sally’s father, who converted the van to an open truck and used it mainly to transport oysters. In those days the van was regularly driven by Arthur Rendle.
Recognising the place that CV 2747 has in the history of Port Navas, Paul Niblett from Michelin brought her down to be exhibited at this year’s Regatta.
At a splendid buffet lunch at the Crill Manor Hotel Paul Niblett presented the village with a specially commissioned cartoon in appreciation of the welcome CV 2747 received on her return home.

Wonderful weather and a record crowd combined to make the 2004 Port Navas Regatta a truly memorable event. Scores of organisers and helpers turned up to run the food, activities, games, races and various stalls. The children’s field races, supervised by local teacher Ethne Brandson, were very well supported and this year a ‘balloon man’ was on hand to provide extra entertainment. Also very popular were the games, such as ‘Don’t Ring the Bell’ and Hoopla, organised by Aline Turner. The Whiskey Maze competition concluded with an exciting roll off between four contestants – the final winner was Robert Shea. The Tug o’ War, organised by Henry Shaw, is always a hard fought contest. This year The Buchanans were victorious in a thrilling final. The barbecue, drinks, cakes and – very popular on such a hot day – ice cream was served by a busy team led by Ann Ohly and Sally Annan. The Budock Vean Hotel donated the meat for the barbecue and there were over 100 contributions of cakes and biscuits from local residents.
The RNLI and Coastguard enacted an exciting rescue demonstration and the gig Golden Gear and crew were on show. The Constantine Silver Band played popular tunes throughout the evening creating a wonderful carnival atmosphere. The committee boat team led by Nigel McClusky kept order on the water and announcing duties were very ably shared by Phil Badger and Mike Hutchinson.
The prizes were presented by Rosie McCluskey and, as usual, the rowing and swimming races were very competitive. The ‘Row and Run’ was split this year to give the ‘Under 16s’ a better chance. Jomby and Pip Badger were victorious in this category. Richard and Treve Winfrey took the St Euny Cup for the ’16 and over’ race. The Ron Badger cup for overall highest point score for women went to Gill Pascoe and the President’s Cup for men was taken by Dave Harford.
